Experience your world > USA
Though the geographic size of the U.S.A. is comparable to that of Australia, the population is approximately 16 times greater. Within the vast land that makes up the U.S.A. and the 6 time zones that divide it, there is much diversity in its culture. Often noted as being the world’s pace-setter, Americans are a goal-oriented, “can-do” society that strives to give opportunity to all its citizens to reach their full potential of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The U.S.A.’s rich landscapes and riverways have served throughout history as an inspiration for noted writers, poets and film producers.
Since the U.S.A. is sometimes seen as a world leader in the way it handles its domestic and international affairs, study in the U.S.A. offers a unique vantage point for examining contemporary social and political issues. Americans are hard-working and very open-minded on many things, including their feelings towards the many important issues that face the country. Another side of this openness is in their unique brand of hospitality. The host-family, selected by S.C.C.E.’s American affiliate organisation, expects the Australian student to totally become a member of their family. That means you will be expected to share in the household work as well as the fun. Belonging to a family in the U.S.A. means participating in the many family gatherings and activities that make up their busy schedule. This could include dances, parties, camping trips, bicycle rides and religion. American families are eager to share all sides of life in the U.S.A. and realise that a student’s well-being and safety are a priority.
Semester and year students are enrolled in an American High School and usually are required to study U.S. History, Government and Literature. They have a choice of many elective courses such as art, music, drama and photography. Team sports are very popular, in addition to the special clubs that students can join.
N.B. Two or three-month program students take part in various academic, social, and educational activities in the local community and some do not attend school regularly or at all.

I can safely say that this was the most memorable and enjoyable experience of my life. The family I was fortunate to stay with were extremely good to me, and although we had to become accustomed to the extreme differences between our two English speaking countries, we still regularly stay in touch. They had hosted two exchange students before me, and one of them from Sweden wrote to me to help me settle in the first week of my stay. We will keep in contact and have decided to both return to America in the future.

HAWAII
Consider requesting Hawaii as an interesting, warm, hospitable, alernative to mainland U.S.A. for either November or December programs.

The photos were taken on an exchange excursion to Arizona. The best part of the trip was making friends from all over the world. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel widely throughout the USA during my ten months. What an opportunity that was to see amazing things and meet wonderful people. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
