Experience your world > USA
Though the 50 states have a geographic size comparable to that of Australia, the population is approximately 16 times greater. Within the vast land that makes up the USA and the six time zones that divide it, between Hawaii and Maine there is much diversity in its culture.
Americans are a goal-oriented, ‘can-do’ society that strives to give opportunity to all its citizens to reach their full potential of ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’
The USA’s rich landscapes of mountains, seas and valleys, have served throughout history as an inspiration for noted writers, poets and film producers.
Since the USA is known for its political powerhouse, living and studying upon its shores offers a unique vantage point for examining contemporary social and political issues.
Americans are hardworking and very open-minded, particularly their feelings towards the many important issues that face the country. Another side of this openness is their unique brand of hospitality.
The host family expects the Australian student to become a fully-fledged member of their family, sharing in the fun as well as the household chores. Exchange students participate in the many family gatherings and activities that dominate their busy schedules – camping trips, bicycle rides, parties, sporting events and games.
Semester and year students are enrolled in an American high school and usually are required to study local history, government and literature. They have a choice of many elective courses such as art, music, drama and photography. Team sports are very popular, in addition to the many unique clubs students can join through their schools and in the community.
NB: Participants on November and December programs may not be enrolled in US schools but will be involved in community activities, school functions and visits, family holidays, sporting events and daily family life.

"I can safely say that this was the most memorable and enjoyable experience of my life.
"The family I was fortunate to stay with were extremely good to me, and although we had to become accustomed to the extreme differences between our two English speaking countries, we still regularly stay in touch. They had hosted two exchange students before me, and one of them from Sweden wrote to me to help me settle in the first week of my stay. We will keep in contact and have decided to both return to America in the future."

HAWAII
Consider requesting Hawaii as an interesting, warm, hospitable, alternative to mainland U.S.A. for either November or December programs.

"The photos were taken on an exchange excursion to Arizona. The best part of the trip was making friends from all over the world.
"I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel widely throughout the USA during my ten months. What an opportunity that was to see amazing things and meet wonderful people.
"Thank you so much for this opportunity."
