Experience your world > Spain

Geographically, Spain faces in four directions: towards Africa, Europe, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. These four directions, each with their own particular characteristics, historically and culturally have had an effect on Spain’s total persona. This is a country replete with palaces, museums, a unique countryside, and villages which convey the rich and powerful Spanish culture and lifestyle that at one time was spread around the world by legendary maritime activity.

The dazzle of Spain comes alive to students who join Southern Cross Cultural Exchange for either a short or long-term program. Warm and genuine “my home is your home” friendliness and hospitality is readily exhibited in Spanish host families, who eagerly await the arrival of Australian exchange students.

The Spanish people enjoy a lifestyle that values close family ties and celebration of daily life. S.C.C.E. programs allow participants entrance into this family-oriented society as not only a short time visitor, but a long-term "compadre".

On the Balearic island of Menorca...a beautiful ceremony, spoken in Catalan, took place by the water where the tied-up boats along with the setting-sun and the low, white-washed houses made a very picturesque scene. The couple had chosen a civil type of wedding....The other wedding, this time traditional ...was held in a Catholic church, in a small village of Segovia where the bride had grown up. Because it was so small, nearly the entire village population attended the wedding. Another family was added to the already hugely extended familia. The bride’s tiny family happily merged into the large family, and I knew exactly how they felt...As fifteen of us chatted around the table the next day, my own future was brought up. ‘We’ll have to find somebody suitable in the family to marry you, that way you can stay in Spain’, they said pointedly to a young man, who suddenly became very interested in his paella. Of course, everybody laughed. But, I wondered....

Sabine Elvy, from Canberra, A.C.T. to Carceres, Spain

Sabine also went on exchange to France to Les Sables d’Olonne. After HSC scores of 97 in Spanish and 98 in French, Sabine has commenced Arts/Law at Australian National U.

S.C.C.E. has a strict policy of returning all participants to their families in Australia – for a while at least.

From my exchange experience, I gained a look at a completely new culture, a new family, fantastic friends, a new language, and a better understanding of myself. The Spanish organisation was nice and replaced and I felt looked after by them. My host family was delightful.

Amber Jamieson from Williamstown, VIC to Miranda de Ebro Spain

Exchange has been for me a previous period of time in which to concentrate solely on soaking up everything the world has to offer, uninterrupted or muddled by the usual stresses of school, work or the future. A pause. A time in which to explore, to learn, to reflect. A fascinating adventure of discovery within a foreign country. A startling revelation of m y own culture, And possibly most confronting of all, an unrivalled journey of self-discovery.

Uschi Steedman from Mansfield, VIC to Torre, Vitoria, Spain
