Experience your world > South Africa
South Africa is well-endowed with a large assortment of wonderful experiences for S.C.C.E. students to enjoy - the exuberant levels of sport played in school, the rich history, socio-economics and culture there to study, viewing the ‘big five’ in one of the world’s most recognised national parks and heritage sites. South Africa has recently experienced the most important social, political and cultural changes in its entire history. Previous norms are being challenged, and this is reflected in the people’s daily lives as they enjoy the process of building the “rainbow nation”.
In 1994, the Directors of S.C.C.E. and its French affiliate organisation were invited to visit South Africa to advise on setting up the first student exchange organisation there since the end of Apartheid, ensuring for potential Australian and French students a secure intercultural learning experience. Knowing that many Australian students would like to have an exchange program offering opportunities to ‘make a difference’, S.C.C.E. requested a program component whereby Australian secondary students could help without interference to their safety or the integral components of the secondary exchange program.
Commencing with the January 2008 programs, S.C.C.E. students will have a unique opportunity to ‘give back’ to their host communities. Projects of varying social and environmental priority will be assigned based upon hosting location, school schedules, secure transportation, and, especially, providing the opportunity for this age-group to have successful results and gain satisfaction. Suggestions were: spearheading a beautification project, keeping orphanage toddlers occupied, and animal rescue projects.
S.C.C.E.’s affiliate organisation takes great care in selecting a suitable host family, school and counsellor for students. The South African school system is regarded highly for its scholastic standards and large array of art and sport that are incorporated into the curriculum. Join the select group of young Australians that have travelled with S.C.C.E. to augment their appreciation for South African lifestyle and the beauty of South Africa, and who have returned with a new understanding of a country in a state of positive change.

For a cultural exchange I believe there is no better destination than South Africa. It is as culturally rich and diverse as any curious open-minded student could hope to experience. The population exhibits a warm, inquisitive and pleasant attitude towards their fellow man; they seem to have a particularly high level of respect for Australia. Jo’burg is rich with history, change and the newfound taste of freedom. I found it beautiful. I want other students to know how symbolic it is to be a part-time citizen of Africa, which is, after all, the theoretical location of the birth of mankind. And then, there’s the majestic animals...
