Experience your world > Norway
Norway’s 2720km coastline on the North Atlantic is raggedly indented with inlets, fjords, peninsulas and islands and therefore the country is home to one of the largest merchant fleets in Europe. Over 80% of Norway’s land area is taken up by mountains and forests, and about one quarter of Norway’s land is above the Artic circle. Today Norway numbers 4 million in population, which is just somewhat larger than the greater Sydney area.
Like most Scandinavian countries, English is a common second language. Considering Norway’s rough-hewn and beautiful countryside, it is not surprising that the Norwegians, like the Australians, are very outdoors-oriented.
They do a lot of walking, as befits a country where distances are great, and roads are often rough. Norwegians get used to snow in winter, and are less likely to burrow inside when the weather is cold. The word “Ski” is Norwegian and both cross-country and downhill skiing are avidly pursued by large numbers of people. The arts in Norway are heavily supported by state subsidies, particularly in film and book publishing. Norway has produced artists of international renown such as, painter Edvard Munch, composer Edvard Grieg, and dramatist Henrik Ibsen.
Norwegians, like their neighbours, are noted for being some of the most welcoming in the world and their keen interest in sport and the outdoors will be of value with Australian students. The S.C.C.E. participant can look forward to returning with gained self-confidence and independence in addition to a new-found knowledge of the riches of Norway
