Experience your world > Norway

With a 2720km coastline on the North Atlantic raggedly indented with stunning fjords, peninsulas and islands that tourists marvel at year-round, Norway is renowned for its stunning landscape and is one of the world’s few locations where one can catch a rare glimpse of the sporadic Northern Lights.

Over 80% of Norway is occupied by mountains and forests, and about one quarter is above the Arctic Circle, home to reindeer and, according to small children, also Santa Claus.

Today Norway’s total population sits just under five million people, comparable with the City of Sydney. Its capital Oslo presides over a captivating archipelago and is filled with wide tree-lined boulevards, parks and gardens, as well as the Nobel Peace Centre.

The arts in Norway are heavily supported by state subsidies, particularly in film production and book publishing. Norway has produced artists of international renown including painter Edvard Munch, composed Edvard Greig and dramatist Henrik Ibsen.

Norwegians, like their neighbours, are noted for being some of the world’s most welcoming and their keen interest in sport and the outdoors will be of value to Australian students. Considering Norway’s rough-hewn and beautiful countryside, it is not surprising that Norwegians, like Australians, are very outdoors-oriented. For a country where distances are great, Norwegians conveniently enjoy walking, both in shine or snow. “Ski” is actually a Norwegian word and cross-country and downhill skiing are avidly pursued throughout the country.

Nature has helped to shape the Norwegian character and given it a kind of durability that has formed the Norwegian national identity. Thanks to the country’s rich natural resources, Norway has also long been a wealthy trading nation. Like most Scandinavian countries, English is a common second language.

S.C.C.E. participants can look forward to returning with increased self-confidence and independence in addition to a new-found knowledge of the riches of Norway.

"I gained a second family, international friends, a home away from home, maturity, memories."

Virginia Elissa Clark, VIC – S.C.C.E. exchange student

"My ever increasing proficiency and fluency in another language and ability to cope with situations by myself. I also enjoyed being with my host family, especially my host mother who became a great friend."

Ruth Johnson, QLD – exchange student
