Experience your world > Holland

Holland is a small country that can be crossed by car in a couple of hours. Packed into this petite area is an astonishing fanfare of things for S.C.C.E. participants to experience. The unique geography of Holland has shaped the country’s history and the character of the people. Also known as the Netherlands named for its unusually low (nether) geographic location, Holland has risen literally, from the sea to become an affluent, intriguing nation. Perhaps the Dutch people’s constant struggle with water, as exemplified by mythical Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the leaking dam and save his town from flooding, have made them resolute and successful.

Well planned cities and classic architecture, the rolling rural landscape and enduring works of art of the seventeenth century assembled in the many public museums, are among the rewards waiting for the exchange student to discover. S.C.C.E. programs expose students to the cultural treasures, warm and hospitable people, and lush landscapes that inspired Vincent Van Gogh and others to celebrate the beauty and simple pleasures of Holland. Students are also introduced to the Dutch language which is reinforced in their host family and school class rooms. Families matched with participants for their interest in foreign culture and desire to share their way of life become a support for the rigor of the school placement. The Dutch school system is regarded highly for its academic standards and integration of arts and sport into the daily curriculum.

Whether it be on a family outing or a community-oriented activity with other students, S.C.C.E. programs allow participants entry into Dutch life as found in both rural or urban environments. A week long residential arrival orientation is included in the August and January programs.

The most satisfying part was learning another language. There is nothing that beats speaking a second language fluently.

Alison Fogarty

I look back at my year and can say it was the best year of my life, and I will always have great memories of it. It was a fantastic experience to go and live on another part of the world and learn about a different culture.

Holland is a place filled with friendly people and I was made to feel welcome both at home and school.

Alica Henderson from Toorak Gardens, SA to Venray, Holland
