Experience your world > Germany
Germany offers a unique vantage point for examining contemporary social and political issues. As Germany is often referred to as a benchmark in Europe for the status of the economy, the volatility of minority groups, the cooperation in multi-lateral military efforts, the variance in conservative/liberal politics, Australian exchange students quickly adjust to feeling part of a bigger world after a few weeks living as part of a German family and attending the excellent schools. Many S.C.C.E. returnees have gone back to Germany for graduate degrees. German youth leads the world in seeking international exchange programs to supplement their education.
Known for its legends and folk-tales, the German countryside provides a glimpse of the backdrop for many of the myths and legends found in classic European literature. Germany’s rich landscapes and riverways have served throughout history as an inspiration for noted writers, poets and composers.
Germans, noted for being some of the most hospitable people in Europe, pride themselves in serving some of the best food as well. Since 1985, German families have enjoyed sharing their homes and social lives with nearly 800 Australian students from S.C.C.E.
S.C.C.E. offers a secure and stimulating learning environment, using host families and the academic excellence of German schools to give students an unforgettable exchange experience.

I found this exchange has benefited me by making me independent and more self-confident. As an only child, my experience of living with two host sisters and a host brother was utterly unique. I now have an extended family living in Germany.

My year here in Germany was so good that I would come back if I had the chance. I was grateful to be with my host family. I have learned so much about how the German people live and how they are different from the people in Australia. I am proud of myself as I came to Germany without one word of German and now I can speak it. I will come back one day

...Exchange programs for young people increase their understanding for other cultures... it is youth exchange programs that keep alive the international spirit, stimulate curiosity and build real friendships across the world. The STEP IN / S.C.C.E. exchange programs clearly contribute to building cultural understanding and creating lifelong cultural ties....
Paul O’Sullivan, Australian Ambassador to Germany. |

My exchange experience cultivated my passion for the land, language and its culture. I came back to Australia more determined than ever to become proficient in German and pursue tertiary studies that would embrace my interest in German language and history. I scored 94% in my HSC, made possible by my time living as a local in the country. What made this achievement all the more satisfying was the difference between my pre- and post-exchange trip marks of 20%. I am now enrolled in International Studies at the University of NSW, where I have the opportunity to further my German language skills, and study European history and politics. I will spend my third year of studies at a university in Germany. Thanks to S.C.C.E. for helping me realise a dream, which has fostered the growth of many more.
Colette Mason from Artarmon, N.S.W. to Bergen, Germany |
Following my exchange to Germany with S.C.C.E., I earned my B.A. (major German)and LL.B., U. of Adelaide, spending a year in Germany on law exchange. Returning to Germany, I worked as a paralegal and translator for a large German law firm. I lived there until recently, also travelling extensively in Europe and South Africa. I met my Belgian fiancee in Germany; we are moving to Canberra where I have a position with the Dept. of Industry, Tourism and Resources. My S.C.C.E. program was certainly the beginning of many changes in my life!
Ben Jarvis, Malvern, S.A. to Grenzach-Wyhlen, Germany |

When I met my host family, it was obvious right from the start that we had heaps in common and were perfect for each other.... By the end of the second week, I was using typical German phrases that every German person uses. I guess my language improvement was so great because I spoke German every day and in every sentence. I had decided that I was going to speak German or my program wouldn’t be as worthwhile...There were lots of cultural differences...out the door to go to school at 6:30 a.m....We always ate together and everybody had to be seated before we could begin...I visited Berlin, Hamburg, Kiel, Lubeck, and Langeland (a Danish island)...I am now doing Year 12 German, although in Year 11. I have a much better perspective on cultural differences and other aspects of life...anyone should go on exchange, whether to Germany or another country...If you can’t afford it, you can apply for a scholarship like I did.
