Experience your world > Finland

The birthplace of saunas and Nokia mobile phones, Finland is Scandinavia’s eastern-most member, nestled between Russia, Sweden and Norway, protruding north into the Artic Circle and south into the Baltic Sea.

Extending over 1100km north to south, and over 500km east to west, Finland offers exchange students an experience in a country unlike any other, with over 188,000 lakes and about 180,000 islands, plus an exceptional natural wilderness filled with elk, gray wolves and brown bears (the national animal).

With a somewhat turbulent history dominated by its powerful neighbours, Finland’s population today remains somewhat influenced by its past, with almost half of all Fins speaking Swedish as a second language, many speaking German, and a small Russian migrant community. The majority of Finnish people, particularly the youth, also speak English fluently.

Finland’s unique language however has held firm in spite of its dominant neighbours. Of Uralic origin, the Finnish language shares similarities only with Estonian, Hungarian and some of languages of the indigenous Sami people, one of the largest ethnic groups in Europe. The Sami way of life offers a fascinating glimpse into time-honoured ethnic traditions, with colourful dress, a cappella music and long-established livelihoods, including coastal fishing, hunting and reindeer herding.

One of the lands of the midnight sun, in summer Finland’s coastal regions are a haven for fishing and sailing in summer, while the unspoilt wilderness invites exploration by outdoors enthusiasts.

In the south, the capital Helsinki is paradise for lovers of architecture, and offers a thriving arts scene with several museums and theatres.

Through living with a family eager to share their lives and customs, SCCE programs expose students to the complex history and intriguing culture that today shape the captivating Finnish character.

"Thank you S.C.C.E. for providing me with the chance to become a part of a country and a culture I have been looking at from a distance my whole life - it’s just that isn’t it?

"An exchange is so much more that just ‘visiting’ another country - you live with its people, immersed in the culture and language, and without even realising it, you become a part of that country."

Becky Tomilson, Vic. – Exchange Student

"Being an exchange student was invaluable. I saw amazing places, ate unique foods, met some of my best friends. It was an experience which influenced me more than many other experiences. Since then, I’ve completed a degree, travelled to a number of countries, and lived in Japan for about 2-1/2 years.

"After 7 years, I am finally going back to Finland! Friends and host family have extended their offers of accommodation, transportation, sightseeing - everything. Their generosity is endless. I was so fortunate with the placement and support during my exchange time there."
