Student Exchange Programs

Year Programs
A school year abroad during Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 allows students to become fully immersed in the culture of the host country. Each student lives as part of the family, attends the local high school and is soon considered a member of the community

In most receiving countries, the S.C.C.E. year program can be either the northern hemisphere school year, from September to late June or the southern hemisphere school year, from February through November. The exception is the Japanese program which runs from March to January.

Students who have completed Year 12 in Australia make the most of an opportunity to spend a semester or year studying overseas before returning to Australia to begin tertiary studies or work. Any programs beginning in January may be taken as a ‘year 13’ program. This is a good chance to confirm or expand interests before entering further education or a career.

Semester Programs
A semester of cultural immersion instils students with the growing confidence necessary to live in another culture and become accustomed to the demands of a different lifestyle. Language fluency is increased and students may even dream in a language other than English!

Summer Programs (2 or 3 months)
Summer programs depart in early November for 3 months or early December for 2 or 3 months. These programs give students a taste of another culture and the chance to increase their global network, usually without interruption to Australian schoolwork.

Summer programs are designed for students who wish to spend the Australian summer abroad to return in time for first semester the following year. Year 9 and 10 students usually depart in November for 3 months, year 11 students in December for 2 months, and year 12 students for 3 months before starting university. Perfect for language training, short programs allow students just long enough to start understanding and start adjusting to their new culture. For most, it’s a chance to share in a traditional northern hemisphere Christmas.

S.C.C.E. Groups
A question we are commonly asked at S.C.C.E. is “may I take a friend?” If you wish to be placed in the same area as a friend from Australia or simply prefer the idea of travelling in a group environment, S.C.C.E. offers the opportunity to live overseas as a family member and student for five or six weeks in France, Germany, or Italy.

Groups consist of students selected from all over Australia. Each member of the group is placed with a host family in the same community and many will attend the same school. S.C.C.E. group travel is recommended for those who want a social challenge and are committed to making the most of the cultural homestay experience.

S.C.C.E. Group to Italy
For five weeks early December, the group lives in a northern city steeped in history, architecture, art, and, especially, the warm hospitality offered by volunteer host families and the local school. There will be excursions to other renowned cities with the last three days in Rome.

S.C.C.E Group to Germany
For six weeks early December, this group is usually hosted by volunteer host families all over the city of Berlin and attends various schools there. Other interesting cities may be offered as a substitute. There will be daily family life, some sightseeing excursions and social occasions. A chance to glimpse and begin understanding this important nation.

S.C.C.E Group to France
For 6 weeks early December this group goes to Paris, living with voluntary host families while attending school. Paris group applications close as soon as the group is full, so apply early. Each group member will be placed with an individual host family. Late applications could be assigned to alternate French group destinations.

School Groups
S.C.C.E. can tailor a group program for the particular interests of a specific school.

Let us do the work: S.C.C.E. administers the entire program before, during and after: orientations, host family placements, overseas schools, contact with parents, airlines, visas, overseas organisations, governments, and provides evaluation. S.C.C.E. is constantly available to adapt, monitor, counsel and move quickly in case of emergency. S.C.C.E. accepts legal liability, responsibility for education, behaviour, medical affairs.

Responsibility: S.C.C.E. won’t offer a program unless it is safe, the overseas organisation reliable and professionally-run with the purpose of furthering international education and understanding. A network of exchange organisation personnel is available around the world and around the clock. They know how to solve problems in travel, visas, host family incompatibility, health and legalities.
