Experience your world > Spain
“Spain is different!” as the Spaniards say. Although, they don’t specify from what – from the rest of Europe, from the rest of the world, or from various parts of itself?
Definitely a nation of contrasts, Spain offers S.C.C.E. students an opportunity to discover new values, old traditions, robust family relationships, pride in history and nationality and above all, passion for life.
Due to its colourful history, each area varies significantly. Geographically, Spain faces four directions – towards Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Historically and culturally different, and with fascinating ethnic populations, each region has had its own influential effect on Spain’s complete persona.
But overall, outstanding as a national attribute is the Spaniard’s welcoming generosity and sharing: “mi casa es su casa.”
The daily life, the meals and local food, the village community, all centre around and pay credence to the idea that life is granted to be good, shared, happy and enjoyed – and lived with a deep, proud sense of responsibility.
The dazzle of Spain together with its romantic language comes alive for participants on either long or short programs.

"On the Balearic island of Menorca...a beautiful ceremony, spoken in Catalan, took place by the water where the tied-up boats along with the setting-sun and the low, white-washed houses made a very picturesque scene. The couple had chosen a civil type of wedding....The other wedding, this time traditional ...was held in a Catholic church, in a small village of Segovia where the bride had grown up.
"Because it was so small, nearly the entire village population attended the wedding. Another family was added to the already hugely extended familia. The bride’s tiny family happily merged into the large family, and I knew exactly how they felt...
"As fifteen of us chatted around the table the next day, my own future was brought up. ‘We’ll have to find somebody suitable in the family to marry you, that way you can stay in Spain’, they said pointedly to a young man, who suddenly became very interested in his paella. Of course, everybody laughed. But, I wondered...."

Sabine also went on exchange to France to Les Sables d’Olonne. After HSC scores of 97 in Spanish and 98 in French, Sabine has commenced Arts/Law at Australian National University. |

"From my exchange experience, I gained a look at a completely new culture, a new family, fantastic friends, a new language, and a better understanding of myself.
"The Spanish organisation was nice and I felt looked after by them. My host family was delightful."
Amber Jamieson of Williamstown, VIC to Miranda de Ebro, Spain |
"Exchange has been for me a previous period of time in which to concentrate solely on soaking up everything the world has to offer, uninterrupted or muddled by the usual stresses of school, work or the future.
"A pause. A time in which to explore, to learn, to reflect. A fascinating adventure of discovery within a foreign country. A startling revelation of my own culture, and possibly most confronting of all, an unrivaled journey of self-discovery."
Uschi Steedman of Mansfield, VIC to Torre, Vitoria, Spain |
